Nine times out of ten, gaining and maintaining a healthy profit margin is a key objective of a businesses. Whether applicable to your business type or a wider requirement such as GDPR – staying compliant will reduce unnecessary waste of company profits having to pay out legal fees or fines. Standards such as ISO 27001  (Information Security Management) and ISO 45001 (Health and Safety) are a great way to embed a set of process that will protect your business and reduce any risk associated with non compliance of legislation.

#2 Future proof your business

If you look back, even just this last 12 months, you will have felt huge changes in our working environment. For the survival and success of your business, it is vital that it is managed in line with the current environment. There are a huge range of external factors that can impact the success of your organisation these could be political, environmental, social, economical, technological and legal, Having a management system in place that is constantly reviewing these factors ensures that your can put in place strategies to either take advantage of any changes or to proactively protect it, giving you a competitive advantage.

#3 Increases effectiveness and efficiencies

Standards such as ISO 9001 (Quality) enable a business to identify areas of improvement across it’s operations and be able to spot where there are better ways to carry out activities. The standard ensures regular reviewing of customer handling, supply chain appraisals and spotting and identifying risks to name but a few. All of these factors enable a business in continuously improve.

#4 Great material for marketing

When our clients gain certification one of the first things we provide them is with our marketing pack on how to shout about it – certification is something to celebrate!

Showcasing your business is built on firm foundations is a great selling point. Ask yourself, who would your potential buyers rather choose? A business that is structured and has formal processes in place that meet international standards… or a business that just wings it?

Being compliant demonstrates that you have high ethical standards and practices in place. What a great story to tell your stakeholders.

#5 Increases Trust and Confidence

Trust and confidence are huge factors when it comes to choosing a supplier and then continuing to stay with them.

By having in place management systems that proactively identify areas of risk so that they can be addressed, helps a business streamline their services so that the customer has less of a chance to experience an issue when dealing with your organisation – resulting in a higher customer life time value.

#6 Reduces employee churn

Engaged employees are less likely to have negative feelings towards their employer. If they feel that their contributions are valued, that they are safe in their roles and that who they work for is a responsible employer, the propensity for them to seek employment elsewhere, reduces significantly.

The cost of recruiting (time and budget) is extremely high. This can be avoided through having standards in place that encourage employee engagement.

Where do I start?

In the first instance you need to decide which are the most relevant standards for your business.

The most common standard is ISO 9001 (Quality), however more businesses are looking to implement additional standards such as ISO 14001 (Environmental), ISO 45001 (Health and Safety) and ISO 27001 (Information Security Management).

A new certification body, Simply Certification Limited, was launched in August 2020 and promises to make the ISO and PAS 2030 certification experience to its customers and enjoyable one!

Austin Gibbons, one of the founders of Simply explains;

“I’ve worked in the industry for a few years now as a lead auditor and consultant and it became really apparent to me that organisations actually viewed certification assessments on the whole as a negative experience. Often dreading ‘that time of year’ again which I felt was a shame.

It also appeared to me and that many certification bodies in general were quite dry and didn’t have much of personal appeal. Customer service and a positive culture is everything for a successful business, however this had seemed to be lost in the midst of assessments, standards and compliancy for many certification bodies.”

Austin continues;

“Simply Certification was born out of a team of us coming together with the same vision, attitude and passion; to provide a certification experience that wasn’t needlessly overcomplicated, that our clients enjoy and that is an overall great customer experience.

We are able to provide independent certification that satisfies many our client’s customers’ requirements. However we are underway to gain UKAS accreditation across a number of standards, which brings even more value to our customers.”

Based in the North East of England, Simply Certification are offering a range of products, including:

Launched in August 2020, Simply Certification is aiming to be the certification body of choice for the construction industry.

Austin Gibbons, one of the founding members of Simply explains:

“Construction is the natural choice for Simply as our key sector. Our team have huge experience in the sector as assessors, consultants and other disciplines which brings a lot to the table for our clients.

We’ve launched this new certification body as we felt the market was in desperate need of a provider that didn’t overcomplicate certification and who provided an enjoyable customer experience. There are many certification bodies around that have become large institutions that are feared and that have lost the “customer comes first” approach.

Our approach is personable, reliable and friendly. We recognise that yearly ISO assessments are often dreaded due to organisations not having a good relationship with their provider. We have broken the mould on this and work in a collaborative manner. Our customers come first and we are there to help their business to flourish.

Assessments should be seen as an opportunity to take a step back and take a look at a business to find improvements. Not a horrendous experience trying to quickly hide faults from the auditor. It’s amazing how many clients our team have come across that have a really dim view of their certification body.”

Compliance is key in construction

Having an independently certified management system such as ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), ISO 45001 (health and safety)  and PAS 2030 (home energy efficiency installation) is quickly becoming a must for those in the construction sector to gain contract awards and access funding.

Austin explains:

“Having worked as a consultant and lead auditor in the industry I have seen huge growth in the need for organisations to demonstrate compliancy across a range of industry standards.

We have developed a suite of certifications that meets the needs of this industry in particular, including ISO 19650 (BIM) to enable our customers to use one certification body that meets all of their needs.

It’s an exciting time for us all at Simply and we very much look forward delivering the best service to our construction clients.”
