Breaking Barriers: Gary Pearson on Bringing His Daughter into the World of Assessment
Q: Gary, tell us a bit about the week you brought your daughter along for work experience.
I was scheduled for on-site assessments with Simply Certification, and my daughter had expressed a real interest in understanding what I do. Opportunities like this can be rare for young women in construction-related environments, so I thought it would be a great way for her to see the process first-hand.
Q: How did Simply Certification respond to the idea?
They were incredibly supportive. Instead of seeing it as an inconvenience or a distraction, they welcomed it. They ensured she felt safe, included, and comfortable, and encouraged her to join in conversations where it was appropriate. That kind of support speaks volumes about their culture.
Q: What was the highlight for your daughter?
She was fascinated by the site visits, seeing how standards are checked, talking to professionals, and understanding the importance of safety and quality. But I think what stayed with her was how open everyone was to answer her questions, even in an environment that’s often male-dominated.
Q: Why do you think moments like this matter?
Representation matters. When young women can see themselves in these roles early on, it becomes easier for them to envision a future in the industry. Simply Certification gave my daughter a chance to see that she could belong in this space, and that’s powerful.
Q: Any advice for other companies?
Be open to these opportunities. Sometimes the smallest gesture, like saying yes to a work experience request, can make the biggest difference for the next generation.
Simply Certification’s Take:
At Simply Certification, inclusion isn’t just a policy; it’s something we live every day. Whether it’s accommodating prayer times, welcoming family members for learning opportunities, or encouraging diversity in traditionally male-dominated industries, we believe in opening doors for everyone.
